LIFE VAIA – WORKS IN QUIROGA, SPAIN
THE WORKS IN QUIROGA
The Galician site of the LIFE VAIA project is located in a forested area within the municipality of Quiroga (Lugo, Galicia, NW Spain).
The forest area was burned in August 2021, destroying over a thousand hectares of forest. The former forest was composed of Pinus spp planted several decades ago. The pilot sites will include a variety of perennial and non-perennial forest trees, anexperiment with medicinal/aromatic/honey-producing plants, and a series of beehives.
Each pilot site and its respective control will be situated in both south and north directions to assess the adaptability of different tree species to be planted. The work began in the autumn of 2022, and the evaluation to be conducted will encompass tree growth as well as mortality rates in both orientations. Meanwhile, the medicinal/aromatic/honey-producing plants will be analyzed for subsequent planting in the pilot sites.
