SUS-SOIL Project

Start date: 2023
End date: 2025
Duration: 48 months
Total budget: €5,997,613.75
Programme: HORIZON-MISS-2023-SOIL

OBJECTIVES

The SUS-SOIL project aims to promote sustainable management of agricultural soils in Europe, in line with the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe.” It seeks to improve soil health through innovative practices, digital tools, and participatory approaches, contributing to the transition toward more resilient, productive, and environmentally friendly agricultural systems.

The main goal is to generate practical knowledge and operational solutions to support farmers, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the protection and restoration of soil functionality.

THE PROJECT

SUS-SOIL – Accelerating the Transition to Sustainable Soil Management in Europe is a European research project funded by Horizon Europe, launched in 2023, involving 27 partners from 12 European countries.

The project focuses on the development and adoption of integrated strategies for sustainable agricultural soil management, relying on a participatory and interdisciplinary innovation model. Project activities include:

  • mapping and assessment of existing practices,

  • development of guidelines and indicators to measure soil health,

  • creation of an interactive digital platform for knowledge and tool sharing,

  • and the launch of Living Labs and Farmer Field Schools to test and co-create solutions directly with farmers.

SUS-SOIL aims to accelerate the technical and cultural shift needed to ensure soil regeneration and sustainability, which are essential for Europe’s food security, biodiversity, and climate resilience.
