Exploring an archaeological site without leaving home is now possible. Thanks to the new 360° Virtual Guide, developed within the KAŠTellieri project, co-funded by the Interreg VI-A Italy–Slovenia Programme, visitors can immerse themselves in some of the most remarkable prehistoric landscapes of the Upper Adriatic.
This new digital experience allows everyone—from history enthusiasts and students to future travellers—to discover six extraordinary prehistoric hillfort sites through an engaging and immersive virtual tour.
Discover the Hillforts of the Upper Adriatic
The virtual guide takes visitors on a journey through six archaeological sites:
- San Quirico
- Elleri
- Monte Carso
- Rupinpiccolo
- Tabor near Vojščica
- Grmača
Hillforts are fortified prehistoric settlements built on elevated ground during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Their strategic locations allowed ancient communities to control surrounding landscapes, natural routes, water resources and agricultural areas.
Today, these sites preserve traces of this fascinating past, including stone ramparts, defensive walls, terraces and other archaeological features that tell the story of life in the Upper Adriatic thousands of years ago.
A New Digital Way to Experience Cultural Heritage
The new 360° Virtual Guide has been created to make this unique cultural heritage more accessible through innovative digital technologies.
Thanks to immersive panoramic views, visitors can freely explore each site, admire the surrounding landscapes and discover the places where prehistoric communities once lived—whether from home, in the classroom or as preparation for a future visit.
The guide represents a new way of experiencing archaeological heritage, supporting inclusive and sustainable tourism while contributing to the KAŠTellieri project’s mission of preserving and promoting the shared prehistoric heritage of the Italy–Slovenia border area.
